BSN Admissions

Admission to the nursing major is highly competitive. Applicants are selected based on their academic record and essay response. A student's academic record includes all grades earned at the college level. Admission decisions are made after the application deadline, and applicants are notified in writing by mid-June.  Some applicants may be placed on an alternate list and will receive an admission decision by July 1. The admissions process occurs once per year. Admitted students will begin coursework Autumn semester.

Ohio State is committed to treating applicants fairly and with dignity and respect.  Please click here to review Ohio State’s new post-admissions policy.

Admission Statistics

The College of Nursing received 390 applications for Autumn 2018 enrollment. Of those, 247 (63 percent) were qualified for review and considered for admission. Out of the total number of applications, 207 (53 percent) were from Ohio State pre-nursing students, 124 of whom were offered admission. The remaining students were admitted from other majors at Ohio State, regional campuses and transfer students from other colleges and universities who have completed equivalent prerequisite courses. The average overall GPA of accepted applicants was 3.8 on a 4.0 scale. Admission to the College of Nursing remains extremely competitive. In addition to the student's GPA, essay responses are strongly considered.

Application Process

Each year begins a new application process. Applicants must complete all prerequisite coursework by the end of spring semester, prior to beginning nursing courses. Please note that applicants that have completed prerequisite coursework outside the University must submit an official transcript, including Spring grades, to the Office of Professional Admissions by May 13, 2019.

Application Review and Course Equivalencies:

All transfer credit will be reviewed by The Office of Professional Admissions for meeting prerequisite requirements.

Each applicant is responsible for verifying that all the prerequisite courses taken (or planned) meet the College of Nursing’s requirements. With this in mind, it is important to include all current and planned transfer coursework in the prerequisite summary on the BSN application. The traditional BSN program does not accept general (GEN), special (SPL), or technical (TECH) credit for prerequisite courses.

Applicants that have been awarded GEN, SPL, or TECH credit or have other deficiencies will be notified through the “To-Do List” in the Applicant Center, which is managed by the Office of Professional Admissions. The “To-Do List” will include further instructions.

Questions or concerns regarding your transfer credit should be directed to the Office of Professional Admissions at (614) 292-9444.

Please note the following:

  • Applicants will not be considered for admission if coursework does not meet the required direct equivalencies or if they do not meet all other admissions requirements.
  • The College of Nursing will not inform applicants of any unfulfilled prerequisite courses.
